Airlines increasingly rely on these programs as a primary source of revenue, even raising debt against the assets of the frequent flyer programs rather than their planes.
Second, Podolsky discussed the impact of airlines’ extensive data analytics on their relationships with travelers. With 30 years of frequent flyer program data, airlines can deliver custom fares based on each customer’s profile, purchasing habits, and bag provisions. This shift has created an opaque environment where consumers are now privy to the same information as the airlines.
To navigate this new landscape, Podolsky advised travelers to use credit cards strategically and limit the sharing of their frequent flyer numbers to maintain a buffer between themselves and the airlines. He also recommended four notable travel credit card programs that could help maximize travelers’ points: CapitalOne Venture X, Chase Sapphire Reserve, American Express Platinum and Centurion, and the no-longer-issued Citibank Prestige card.
Podolsky’s endorsement of the CapitalOne Venture X program was particularly noteworthy. He admitted that just three years ago, he would not have considered recommending Capital One. However, the program has since become his top choice for travelers looking to optimize their rewards.
For those willing to invest in a premium travel card, Podolsky recommended the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which offers a $300 travel credit and three points per dollar spent on travel expenses, including Uber rides, hotels, and airline tickets. AmericanExpress’ Platinum and Centurion cards were also highlighted, with the exclusive Centurion card being the ultimate choice for high-spending travelers.
Lastly, Podolsky advised those holding the Citibank Prestige card to keep it, as it is no longer being issued and remains one of the best travel credit cards available.
